Whilst officers strive to do their best, a lack of base-level knowledge can result in poor practice and untimely and indecisive action, leading to cases being open much longer than necessary and harm to victims being prolonged.
Experience of working with many organisations has also shown that those who provide the best ASB service have things in common: they understand exactly what ASB is, conduct thorough investigations, manage risk effectively, truly work in partnership with other agencies and use the complete toolkit when deciding on action.
The purpose of this book is to try to fill some of these gaps. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the five stages of ASB case management: report, investigation, action, monitor and close. It busts some of the common myths and misconceptions that prevent officers from progressing cases and resolving the problems. It is written in a user-friendly manner, using examples to illustrate key points.
It would provide an excellent, off-the-shelf, introduction for anyone new to ASB, as well as a useful reference tool for more experienced officers.
Whilst primarily tailored for officers tackling ASB in the social housing sector, much of the information contained would be equally useful for anyone managing private sector cases. It would also be useful for other partners who work with social housing providers and wish to know more about the work that they undertake.
What people say…
“An absolutely brilliant read, I have been in the business for 30 years and needed this book many years ago. It is so easy to reference to. It will be my work bible, I cannot put it down. Any officer/person buying this will not be disappointed. I would highly recommend!”
“Well organised, well-paced and thought-provoking. Aimed at those starting out, this book would be a handy refresher for experienced professionals dealing with ASB frequently as well.
Gives a great introduction and also should help housing providers by having skilled staff able to update and improve existing practices.”
“As a soon to be ‘retired’ Local Authority anti-social behaviour/ Public Spaces Protection Order practitioner I’ve taken the opportunity to get hold of this book. I’ve only ‘scanned’ it so far but it would appear to capture what I know, serve as a reminder of what I’ve forgotten, and be a ‘prompt’ to new work. It will be invaluable I’m sure as I consider new professional opportunities- thank you, Janine!”
“Finally!! The ASB officer handbook has arrived! If you are new to Housing/ASB or even if you are long in the tooth (like me), this book is an essential read and future reference guide. With a copy of this well written, easy to follow book, (with fantastic appendices that’ll save you some head-scratching) …. you won’t fail in your quest to navigate the wonderful but often challenging world of anti-social behaviour. Having been one of those officers, thrown in at the deep end, and expected to just learn from colleagues (great as they were and still are), this book will change the way we learn. More than that, it will guard against those cases where we previously have had to learn from our mistakes. The price residents sometimes pay when an officer simply didn’t know something was available to them or were unable to think outside the box, and the extra time it takes to find a route that is right for that case, simply isn’t fair. Thank you, Janine, for providing this essential guide. A must for everyone in this brilliant field of work.”
“This book and anti-social behaviour bible is a superb book for any professional entering the world of ASB case management or an experienced manager who wants a quick reference guide to support their decision-making process or for training materials. Janine Green is a well-respected consultant among partners in the field of anti-social behaviour and this book reflects her knowledge, experience and support in managing casework. With comprehensive chapters and appropriate detail but also explanatory notes and easy reference guidance this book is a must-have for any person in any profession working in the challenging but rewarding world of anti-social behaviour.”
“No ASB case is the same, this is a easy to read textbook that will definitely guide ASB practitioners whether you are new to the field or for reference for the more experienced. ASB cases can be complex and other agencies can help resolve cases… a great section on partnership working in the book! The Appendices are really helpful from progressing cases and resolving them. Its the most updated ASB book and even more relevant now….. as we go through Covid and not having managers and teams in the same room, referring to this book will guide you and be of assistance to case officers and managers.”
*This is an easy read textbook, that isn’t full of jargon and is a must-have for the bookshelf for any ASB practitioner whether you are new to the field or for reference for the more experienced. The few books that are available in relation to ASB are written by legal professionals, however, in this case, the author’s experience as a practitioner, manager and consultant in the world of ASB is refreshing, providing invaluable advice regarding effective case management principles and best practice.”
“Even if you don’t work in social housing, this book is a must-read and a fantastic reference tool whether you are just starting in the field of ASB or you’ve been working in it for years. It is well set out and easy to find specific topics around ASB case management. Will be purchasing copies for my team to learn and refer to.”
